The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sgt. Daniel E. Woodcock, 25, of Glennallen, Alaska, died Mar. 11, in Ad Dawr, Iraq, of wounds suffered from a building explosion while on combat patrol. Woodcock was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Daniel E. Woodcock

Sgt. Woodcock was born April 21, 1981, in Glennallen, Alaska. His childhood was spent in the Glennallen and Copper Center areas. Daniel graduated from Glennallen High School. He joined the Army in July 2000 and joined the 82nd Airborne in January 2001. Dan was deployed to Afghanistan in 2003 for Operation Enduring Freedom. He began his second tour in Iraq in the fall of 2006.

Daniel's decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal.
